Your smile is a window into your overall dental wellness. The dental hygiene team at First Choice Dental is passionate about helping you maintain a healthy mouth and prevent problems before they begin.
We’re proactive about dental health
The foundation of the hygiene visit is the Assessment. During this phase, we:
- Review your medical and dental history with you.
- Conduct a free oral cancer screening, since early detection greatly improves the ability to treat oral cancer successfully.
- Take digital x-rays to check for things we can't see clinically.
- Perform a Diagnodent scan to check for cavities.
- Check the health of your gums.
- Do a caries risk assessment so our recommendations are tailored specifically to you.
- In addition, your dental hygienist will identify any changes they see in your oral health, and will help you find solutions.
- Your dental hygienist will perform a thorough cleaning, removing plaque and hard deposit.
Your 6-month checkups are about more than a polish and a free toothbrush.
In addition to that just-cleaned feeling, staying on top of your regular, 6-month checkups is key to preventing potentially costly and painful oral health problems, such as tooth decay, plaque and hard deposit buildup, and gum disease.
Your dental hygienist is a key member of your health care team, as they’re typically the professional who sees you most often every year. Not only can they help your mouth stay healthy, they can also determine any early signs of oral or overall health issues.
Preventing problems is something to smile about
In addition to maintaining a healthy mouth, preventative visits are also one of the best ways to avoid unexpected dental costs, since we help you stop issues before they start. Your Patient Coordinator will work with you to create a YouFirst Care Plan that protects your health and respects your personal priorities.

This year marks an anniversary that most people in Dane County don’t know anything about—but it’s one that almost all of us can be thankful for. Because back in 1948, Dane County started adding fluoride to our municipal water supply. And while that may not seem like a big deal, studies prove that people who live and grow in communities with fluoridated water experience less tooth decay. A simple, cost effective way to help everyone have heathier teeth? At First Choice Dental, we think that’s something to celebrate. Read More

In summer we wedge in appointments for the kids; a physical for fall sports, an eye exam, plus a semi-annual dental cleaning and checkup. And this could be the summer your kid embraces braces. There’s something about your kids orthodontics that triggers deeply held emotions! Are you old enough to remember those coming-of-age 80s movies where some awkward teenager sat on the bus sporting what appeared to be full-body orthodontia? Did those scenes or the warnings of being locked forever in your first kiss with another metal mouth deter you from getting braces as a kid? Read More
