Mouth guards protect young athletes from injury
Shin guards? Check. Cleats? Check. Mouth guard? Better check! When the game starts, don't take the field without one key piece of protective gear, your athletic mouth guard. Studies show that an athlete is 60 times more likely to suffer damage to teeth when not wearing a mouth guard. A properly fitted mouth guard can help prevent sports-related oral and facial injuries.
Hundreds of Madison student athletes are safer as a result of the First Choice Dental GameFace Mouth Guard program. The GameFace Mouth Guard program is designed to spread the word that wearing a properly fitted mouth guard is cool and can prevent tooth, jaw and other orofacial injuries. Over-the-counter or "boil-and-bite" mouth guards provide some protection. We've recently tested the new Under Armour Performance Mouth Guard and found it to be a great option for keeping kids safe. Another option is to have a custom-fit mouth guard made for you by your dentist. For athletes age 14 and up who have all permanent teeth in place and no braces, custom-fit mouth guards are a great option because they fit better and tighter. A properly fitted mouth guard won't impede communication, breathing, or create hazards to the airway or oral cavity. And they're durable and effective! Whether you choose a custom-fit mouth guard, a boil-and-bite Under Armour mouth guard, or another over-the-counter variety, some protection is much better than wearing no mouth guard at all.
Mouth guards keep young athletes safe!
Soccer players, as well as softball, baseball players and other athletes can learn from football's case study in safety! Prior to the use of properly fitted mouth guards and facemasks, more than 50% of football players' injuries were oral-facial. They now represent less than 1% of injuries. It is estimated by the American Dental Association that mouth guards prevent nearly 200,000 injuries each year in high school and collegiate football alone.

NOTE: Custom-fit mouth guards are ideal for student athletes who no longer have baby teeth present and are not wearing braces or involved in active orthodontic treatment. Other young athletes should instead wear a good quality boil-and-bite mouth guard for protection. If you are part of a sports team and would like information about our program, please email us
